Beginner Bass Lessons in Ashfield

Whether you're looking for someone to help your child learn to read sheet music for school band or looking to join a rock band yourself, our teachers can take you from plinking in a corner to a rock solid rhythm section.

If your looking for kids or adult bass lessons in the Inner West, we've got you covered. Starting off with our introductory five week program, we'll get you used to the fundamentals of bass: string names, proper technique, basic reading and rhythm skills. After that we stream students into small groups.

Group lessons for bass? Yes, actually group learning with bass is a very effective and more fun way to learn. You'll learn how to harmonise and play in time with other students which and prepare for playing in bands which is the bass's best use case. Once you have achieved a level of proficiency on the instrument, you'll then eligible to join our fortnightly jam workshops where we will put you together with other budding instrumentalists.

FAQ

Q: Is bass easier than guitar?

A: Honestly, yes, it is -- especially when you're just getting started. There are less strings, you don't play chords and the rhythms are often simpler. Having said that, learning bass is a great way to small-step yourself into learning guitar.

Q: Who is bass for?

A: Bass is a great instrument for anyone looking to learn both the rhythmic and melodic elements of playing in a band. Bass usually forms the 'glue' between the drums in a band and the guitar or the harmonic instruments if its a jazz band. Because it's monophonic (only one note at a time, generally) it's also a  really great instrument for a non musician to start on.

Q: Do you teacher kids/adults?

A: We teach both children's and adult bass lessons and have separate methods and courses for both.

Q: How does the course work?

A: We do an initial 5-week course where we're introducing you to the core components of bass: strings, rhythm, plucking, arpeggios, etc. (if you've never heard of any of these terms, don't worry, we'll explain!) These lessons are half an hour at a time and are one-on-one so you'll have an opportunity to figure out the basics  before you go into a group class.

After our five week course, we'll assign you one of several small groups. You'll play in unison (all together) and harmony (separate parts) and we'll teach you how to interact with a group musically.

Q: Am I to old to learn?

A: Definitely not! We've taught students in their 80's how to learn, many of whom are still with us and thriving.

Q: What's the youngest age for a child to learn bass?

A: We recommend no earlier than 5. Bass is a fairly simple instrument to pick up but there is a degree of hand eye coordination involved. If you do want your child to start on an instrument, give us a call and we can suggest some options. Ukulele is a good start.

Q: How long does it take to get decent at bass?

A: A surprisingly short amount of time, actually. Everyone is different but you can usually pick up the basics of the instrument (rhythm and fretting) in 3 to 6 months with solid, consistent practice.

Q: Are you local?

A: We're located in Ashfield, right outside the station. We teach bass students from Ashfield, Summer Hill, Haberfield, Leichardt, Croydon and Burwood.

Q: Do group bass lessons really work?

A: It's a fair question but absolutely. Bass is just as capable to be played by multiple people at the same time as guitar. By playing in a group, students are learning real skills like harmonisation and rhythm, not to mention keeping accurate time.

Q: Is it necessary to read  music to play bass?

A: No, not strictly necessary. Plenty of players get by just playing by ear. However, reading adds another tool to the toolbox that will help you become a better and more rounded player. We teach basic reading skills to all students who start with us and most find it a very useful and rewarding skill. Having said that, if you're dead set on just learning using tab and learning by ear, we can accommodate that too.

Q: How is a beginner bass lessons usually run?

A: We'll get you started on our five week intro where we take you through the fundamentals of bass guitar. Your first few lessons will:

- acclimatise you to holding the instrument

- teach you some basic notes and scales

- explain the fundamentals or reading and keeping time

- teach you a couple of fun riffs.

Our lessons run for a half an hour, which is plenty of time for most students to pick up the core competencies on bass, assuming you practice at home!
